PhotoRec is file data recovery software that recovers lost files from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and digital camera memory, including video, documents, and archives. PhotoRec works even if your media's file system has been extensively damaged or reformatted since it ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data.

The program is open-source and free. It recovers missing files from a system using text-based data recovery algorithms. The application scans for data fragments and then pieces them together to find files.
